Ever since Jackie
Brenston cut "Rocket 88", in 1951, guys have been singing about their cars.
Some even go so far as to credit that song as being the first true Rock &
Roll single, a full 3 years before Elvis came along. Throughout the
50's and 60's, there were a lot of car songs, some of the most notable
being "409" and "Little Deuce Coupe". But there were scores of
lesser known bands that tried their hands at the microphone, and some
great songs were recorded by people you've never heard of. That
seems to have been the point, when LA Kustom Kulture Artist, Robert A.
Williams, put together the tracks for this Ultra-Hard-To-Find (these days) compilation. That's his artwork all over the cover, and on the
glamorous picture disks (remember THOSE???) that were packed inside.
I picked up this piece about 10 years ago, by shear accident... A
friend of mine worked at a record store, and she knew I was car-crazy, so
she yanked this copy just for me. I thought at the time that $24.99 was
kind of steep, but it was just too cool to pass up. It turns out
that was not a bad investment! BTW, no, it's not for sale... If
you ever run across a copy, snatch it up, and get ready for some great car
tunes.... |
