THE CARS OF CUBA, APRIL 2007...

Cuba: A time capsule. A 1956 Chevy convertible being used as taxicab in 2007... Unbelievable. I didn't know what to expect from my friend Mary, who told me recently that she was going to Cuba for a little vacation. She can do that, as she's Canadian... Naturally, as soon as I heard this, I began my pleading for old car pics... She wondered what to photograph, and I simply stressed FINS... She came back to the States a short time later (we work together), and produced a little pen drive with scads of car photos... It turns out that they don't ALL have fins, but still, I think she did a pretty admirable job. (Yes, I've Photoshopped a few of them to zoom in on the details...) Here's what she saw: |

And, no, that police officer doesn't look too happy about having his photo taken... From what I've seen on some of the TV shows about similar cars, these guys keep them running just about any way they can. Some are even said to be running with old Soviet type tank engines in place of their original US made motors... Someday, I suppose things will change and we can all go down there to see this stuff for ourselves. |
